–Duan Promotion Evaluation for Overseas Practitioners under the Chinese
Wushu Duanwei System
I. Evaluation Dates and Venues
II. Eligibility
(i)
(ii) Overseas athletes, coaches, team leaders, and accompanying personnel participating in the 12th World Grand Wushu Festival Shanghai may also apply for promotion to or conferment of the corresponding Duanwei by participating in these overseas Duanwei evaluations.
III. Application Criteria
(i) Elementary and Intermediate Duanwei (1st to 6th Duan)
1. Current Duanwei holders who have fulfilled the required tenure are eligible to apply for promotion to the next level after passing the evaluation.
(1) Holders of 1st Duan for at least 1 year → eligible for 2nd Duan;
(2) Holders of 2nd Duan for at least 1 year → eligible for 3rd Duan;
(3) Holders of 3rd Duan for at least 2 years → eligible for 4th Duan;
(4) Holders of 4th Duan for at least 2 years → eligible for 5th Duan;
(5) Holders of 5th Duan for at least 2 years → eligible for 6th Duan
2. New applicants with no prior Duanwei who achieve the specified scores in one of the above international wushu events may apply for Duanwei conferral after passing the evaluation.
(1) A score of 7.5 or higher in either an empty-hand routine or a weapon routine → 2nd Duan;
(2) A score of 7.5 or higher in both an empty-hand routine and a weapons routine → 3rd Duan;
(3) A score of 8.0 or higher in both an empty-hand routine and a weapons routine → 4th Duan;
(4) A score of 8.5 or higher in both an empty-hand routine and a weapons routine → 5th Duan;
(5) A score of 9.0 or higher in both an empty-hand routine and a weapons routine → 6th Duan
(ii) Advanced Duanwei (7th and 8th Duan)
1. 7th Duan: Applicants must have held the 6th Duan for at least 5 years, be at least 40 years old, have systematically mastered a specific style (including Sanda), demonstrated relevant achievements, upheld both moral integrity and the traditional virtues of wushu, and contributed to the international promotion and inheritance of wushu. They are eligible to apply for the 7th Duan after passing the examination.
2. 8th Duan: Applicants must have held the 7th Duan for at least 5 years, be at least 50 years old, be proficient in two or more styles (including Sanda), have outstanding achievements in competition or teaching, and made significant contributions to the global promotion and development of wushu. They are eligible to apply for the 8th Duan after passing the examination.
IV. Evaluation Content
(i) Elementary Duanwei: The evaluation consists of two components: martial arts etiquette examination and technical examination. Martial Arts Etiquette Examination: Includes both the performance of the Baoquan salute and a test on martial virtue; Technical Examination: Candidates must perform one single routine selected from the following options: a routine designated for the elementary Duanwei in the Chinese Wushu Duanwei System Series Tutorial; any officially promulgated routine intended for general promotion or elementary-level competition; or a routine from a recognized style that has been reviewed and approved by the Chinese Wushu Association, provided it is composed with a movement count and technical level equivalent to those of the 1st to 3rd Duan as specified in the Chinese Wushu Duanwei System Series Tutorial.
(ii) Intermediate Duanwei: The evaluation consists of two components: examination on fundamental Wushu theory and technical examination. Examination on Fundamental Wushu Theory: A closed-book written test covering fundamental Wushu theory. Technical Examination: Candidates must perform one single routine selected from the following options: a routine designated for the intermediate Duanwei in the Chinese Wushu Duanwei System Series Tutorial; any officially promulgated routine intended for general promotion or intermediate-to-advanced-level competition; or a routine from a recognized style that has been reviewed and approved by the Chinese Wushu Association, provided it is composed with a movement count and technical level equivalent to those of the 4th to 6th Duan as specified in the Chinese Wushu Duanwei System Series Tutorial.
(iii) Advanced Duanwei (7th and 8th Duan): Candidates must complete three components—technical examination, theory examination, and oral defense—and will be holistically assessed based on their theoretical research, martial virtue, technical proficiency, personal achievements, professional competence, and contributions to Wushu.
1. Theory Examination: A closed-book written test on fundamental Wushu theory and the Chinese Wushu Duanwei System;
2. Oral Defense: An on-site, random-question oral examination.
3. Technical Examination: Routine: One empty-hand routine and one weapons routine, each with a movement count and technical level at or above the 6th Duan standard. Sanda: Demonstration of fundamental techniques and combinations of punches, kicks, and throws/takedowns.
V. Registration Procedure
(i) All applicants for Duanwei evaluation or promotion must submit the following by the specified deadline to the Organizing Committee’s designated email and pay the required fees: Completed Registration Form; Completed Application Form; Two 2-inch photos; A copy of the applicant’s ID card or passport; Supporting materials relevant to the Duanwei applied for.
(ii) Applicants for the 7th or 8th Duan must first pass a qualification review by the Chinese Wushu Association. If approved, the Association will contact the applicant via email or phone to confirm eligibility. Original hard-copy documents and payment of fees must be submitted to the Organizing Committee upon check-in.
VI. Fees
(i) Registration Fee: US$50 per person;
(ii) Training & Evaluation Fee: US$100 per person;
(iii) Technical Service Fee for Promotion:

VII. Certificate Issuance
Those who are confirmed to have been promoted through the examination may, in accordance with the relevant requirements, apply for an electronic Duanwei certificate via the “CHINESE WUSHU” (中国武术) app.

IX. Check-In and Other Matters
(i) Candidates must check in according to the unified arrangements of the Organizing Committee.
(ii) If a candidate’s evaluation results do not meet the applied-for Duanwei, they may accept the Duanwei for which they are qualified.
(iii) Any fee difference resulting from a level adjustment will be refunded or collected accordingly.
(iv) Once registration is accepted, all fees are non-refundable.
(v) The Chinese Wushu Association reserves the right of final interpretation of the Duanwei System.
